Your website
. I presently own or manage 20 domains. When I formed my present company over five years ago I purchased a copy of Microsoft FrontPage and fashioned our corporate website from a template provided with the software. With my now greatly expanded software library I can find just about any excuse to expend seemingly limitless hours refining my sites.Here is what I learned. Unless your business is web design/development, investing your energies in the mechanics of your website is a waste of your valuable time. Even if you are proficient at web design and development, you need to devote the majority of your work-allocated time to activities critical to success of your business. Your online business ideas need to be put before your prospects.

And certainly you’ve seen email after email promising to send gazillions of visitors to your site. There are various other search engine submission services ranging from free (e.g., Microsoft’s Bcentral Small Business Solutions Submit It! Free) to the top of the line WebPosition Gold (having released the latest version of their top-performing product).
The best longer term approach to building your client list is through a content-rich electronic newsletter (electronic magazine -- ezine) that site visitors sign-up for (giving your permission to send them information via email -- called opt-in). These ezines are forms of list servers and I run several myself. These services are available free (www.topica.com, www.groups.yahoo.com which include banner ads). Even better yet, just use Ken Evoy's Site Build It! software to develop your site the ezine list service is included -- along with an e-commerce package!
An alternative approach is to use Internet Marketing's latest version of his Mailloop Business Automation Software. You can host your own newsletter service and set it to run on autopilot -- that is all the supporting functions are automatic. There are multiple bonus features such as automated e-book distribution. You also can use the software to provide a newsletter service to existing and potential clients. It would be an ideal service to combine, as I do, with services helping companies use the Internet to promote local business (see my online business idea of setting up a home-based consulting practice for doing this).
One of the best ways of getting lots of traffic is to hire a sales force that will send people to your site ready to buy your products/services. Whoa you say! Can I do that? You bet! Set yourself up a great affiliate program and you will have the best sellers in the world working for you.
So what does it take to do this? You will have either to
add some software to your site or hire a service to help you. The very best run

Getting paid
. If you’re selling your own products or services online you need to be able to accept credit cards. That means that either you have a merchant account (ability to process credit card payments through your own bank account) and a secure online processing capability (shopping cart) or that you pay someone else to provide this service for you. My business had a merchant account that I set up through my bank. In addition to a one-time charge to purchase a terminal (to submit my credit card transactions) for $848, I paid a minimum monthly service charge of $35. Because I already had my account, I could process online purchases through my bank account at the standard rates (the credit card companies take a cut for each transaction in exchange for depositing the funds in your account immediately).Taking the path I have taken would be a challenge for any start-up entrepreneur. Guess what! Enterprising online entrepreneurs have come up with some solutions to your needs. Credit Card Commerce provides one of the better services I have seen. Their terminal charge and minimum monthly fee are much better than mine. They also provide a shopping cart. The do charge a bit more on the per-action fees so you would have to take a look another look at the total costs when you become very successful
