In our regular management training series we have a number of sessions that address the attitudes needed for success in life. Why? Because attitude is critical to our business success (and our success in life). A study conducted by Harvard and Stanford Universities asked successful business managers which areas were most important to professional performance: skills, knowledge, attitude. The results: skills (5%), knowledge (10% ) and attitude (85%).
What are the right attitudes? Napoleon Hill in his classic book Think and Grow Rich discusses the attitudes necessary for business success. You must “think right” to be successful. In his book Keys to Success he presents 17 principles of personal achievement outlined. I kick off my January training session each year referencing his principles as a framework for lifetime self improvement and pass out a (reduced size) copy that participants can reference daily.

Motivation Tools for Self Improvement
There are many excellent motivational personalities who have expanded upon what basically is Napoleon Hill’s framework for self improvement. One such personality is Zig Ziglar. In one of his tape series sessions Zig recommends reading (or listening to while driving) positive literature for just 20 minutes every day to fortifying positive thinking and expand your education foundation.
A number of powerful tools in helping individuals achieve their goals is covered in the book "Triggers : A New Approach Self Motivation". One technique I have presented in my own Stress Management seminars is "visualization." You take a couple minutes out of your routine and close your eyes and "visualize" a pleasant location or time in your life. The author of "Triggers" suggests using the same visualization technique at home, adding to it pleasant sounds, at the same time using a "Trigger" such as touching an earlobe, elbow, knee, etc. After you train yourself you can "invoke" the "feelings" just using your "trigger." There are many other self-motivation techniques. You can buy a used copy of the book for under $5.
One of the best series of aids combing the use of audio tapes/CDs with the techniques presented in "Triggers" I have seen are produced by Mike Brescia at Think Right Now. For example his I Love Exercising Now! and Eating for Excellent Health Now! are just the right type of new habit-building aids to start the best overall fitness program of the century (I know - my whole family is following this amazing, but simple formula.
